About
Hey, I'm Tom. I'm working towards being a theatrical theorist. I write a bit, think a bit, sing a lot when I'm high. Hopefully you'll like something on here...At what point did any of the protesters overstep? I’m afraid you can’t just claim they did and leave it at that. You didn’t give a single example, indicating that you’ve heard they ‘over-stepped’, or perhaps read it in the Herald Sun, and have decided to agree with a publication that prints Andrew…
Wow, suddenly I’m a fascist? Right. Funnily enough, personal attacks and condescension really don’t help convince me to change my viewpoint. And the day I start reading the Herald Sun is the day I have lost my mind. I was at work all week, so no I wasn’t there. I watched quite a few videos on YouTube, and the rest has been word of mouth.
I never said that the protesters retaliated physically, but perhaps my phrasing wasn’t clear. By saying they overstepped, I was referring to the way they refused to leave.
Plenty of warnings were given. A notice of eviction given by the city council was one of them, because believe it or not camping in the city is not allowed. You’re lucky you got a week. Another of the warnings was an official order to vacate given by police, and refusal to follow an official police order IS against the law.
To be completely honest, the more I read your post the less I even want to respond to it. You’ve moved out of passive aggression into active hostility. I’m not remotely interested in arguing with you. We disagree, and as far as I can tell neither of us is going to change our mind. You can feel free to keep spewing vitriol at me or not, whatever. Just don’t expect a response. I’m done.
I don’t consider it a personal attack to call someone a fascist. Fascism is a political ideology, I was demonstrating a link between the views you’re supporting and the ideas of said ideology. I did not call you a fascist, mostly because I don’t believe you to be one.
I did not ‘spew vitriol’, but I think it’s only to be expected that a certain tone pervades my response. It was an alarming situation, and it alarms me that people support the behaviour of the police. Sometimes one has to be more than passive, and I can’t appologise for that. That said, you can only get so much regarding tone from the written word. Even saying that, I don’t believe I am being hostile and I certainly don’t intend to be, but I will be direct. You’re the 99% as well, the point is not to alienate you. Besides, to complain of my tone is not an argument.
However, you’ve decided you don’t want to respond. That’s fine. But you didn’t respond to a lot of my points, and those that you did respond to you did with reiterations. I don’t think this is the place to discuss this with you, since your primary issue is with tone. I can’t really understand that, so I’ll have to let it be.
Above all, if anyone else reads this, know that I am not a spokesperson. I speak with no authority or endorsement from the Melbourne General Assembly. I can only suggest that, when the Occupation is re-established (which will be difficult following Doyle’s promise to shut it down wherever in Melbourne it is set up) you go down and talk to as many people as possible.
I feel pretty disheartened now. Cassie, having met you, this completely baffles me. The violence was quite serious, but above all their tactic intends to intimidate people into silence. So I stand by what I said. We have a right to demonstrate, and we’ll defend it. If we don’t, as you imply (it was not a camp, there is a language issue with calling it that if we’re discussing legality) then we’ve got to make sure we get it.
